Wednesday 7:00 – 9:00 PM

How are teachers portrayed in the social imagination, in popular culture, in the sociology of teaching—and in the hopes and fears of those who teach? What do representations of teachers and teaching have to do with the lived experiences of teaching? “What,” as one distinguished sociologist puts it, “does teaching do to teachers?”

How are persons shaped and constrained, recognized and misrecognized, as teachers, by the discourse of their times?

What, if anything, is certain about teaching, and what uncertain?

We will investigate these and related questions, individually & collaboratively, calling on personal experience and a variety of texts and media. For more information and to see the syllabus: Professor Dirck Roosevelt, dr2692@tc.columbia.edu
