Teacher Opportunity Corps

The Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC) is a New York State Education Department grant funded program designed to increase the number of underrepresented and economically disadvantaged individuals in the teaching profession. This selective and ethnically diverse program provides financial and academic support to applicants from underrepresented* groups who are preparing to meet the needs of culturally diverse students in P-12 schools.

Components of Award

  • 3 tuition points per semester toward TC courses during internship semester
  • $1000 stipend per semester during internship semester
  • Reimbursements for teacher certification exams

Participant Eligibility

  • *First Priority will be given to individuals who have been historically underrepresented in the teaching profession. For the purpose of TOC, these groups include Asian; Black/African American; Hispanic/Latino; American Indian and Alaskan Native; Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander
  • Second Priority will be given to individuals who are economically disadvantaged
  • Third Priority will be given to any other individual who is not historically underrepresented nor economically disadvantaged
  • Must be enrolled in a teacher certification program at TC
  • Must be a New York State Resident i.e. have lived in NY at least 12 months prior to submitting an application for this program, and have an established domicile/permanent residence in NY
  • Must be committed to teaching in NY for at least 2 years after graduation, preferably in an urban setting

Program Requirements

  • Participation in an internship at a partnership school near TC for 2 days a week (internship requirements will vary depending on the needs of the P-12 school)
  • Attendance in professional development seminars two times a month that will take place at the same school as the internship or at TC
